Laser Treatment Preparation

Preparation for Laser Treatment is relatively simple, but extremely important to follow to receive maximum results from your treatment. The team at Coastal Laser Center in Newport News, VA recommends a few simple rules to follow before your treatment begins.

How to Prepare for Laser Treatment

If you’ve made it this far in your conversation with Coast Laser Center, you’re ready to get the ball rolling on your Laser Tattoo Removal or one of our other laser treatments. Generally, preparation for laser treatment is quite simple. There are a few things one should avoid in the weeks or days prior to receiving a treatment. If you’d like to speak to one of our friendly staff, just contact us today during normal business hours.

1. First, protect the area to be treated from the sun. UV light can damage the skin and we want to ensure the treatment area is in the best possible condition to receive laser treatment. We will not perform any laser treatment on an area of new sunburn. If sun exposure cannot be avoided, use sunscreen with SPF 50 or greater on the treatment area in the weeks leading up to your treatment.

2. If you are receiving a facial treatment, do not apply make-up prior to the treatment or ensure you remove all make-up completely prior to your treatment. Any additional pigment from make-up will hinder the effectiveness of the laser. Also, in the days prior to your appointment, avoid using facial cleansers with salicylic acid, retinols or other harsh topical products on the face as these can contribute to photosensitivity.

3. Finally, if you are receiving treatment in an area where you have excessive hair, please shave or remove hair prior to your appointment. If excessive hair is not removed, the light from the laser will react to the hair instead of the skin or only partially to the skin rendering the treatment ineffective overall.
