Laser Tattoo Removal
How does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?
It's all in the details...
When a tattoo is applied, a needle deposits ink particles into the skin’s dermis layer. Upon insertion, your immune system recognizes the ink particles as foreign material and sends bacteria-eating cells called macrophages to absorb and remove them. The macrophages dispose of the ink through the lymphatic system to be naturally processed and cleared.
However, the macrophages are significantly smaller than the ink particles, which makes removing the tattoo all at once tricky. Instead, your immune system continuously sends macrophages to chip away small ink fragments over time, which explains why tattoos gradually fade and lose color but are generally permanent.
Laser tattoo removal speeds up this natural fading process by breaking down the large ink particles into nanoparticles which are easier for the macrophages to absorb. Our Asclepion PicoStar® and EternityTSR lasers emit quick pulses of light energy onto the unwanted tattoo during a laser treatment. The ink particles absorb the light energy, heat up, and shatter into tiny fragments flushed out through the lymphatic system.
Every customer will need multiple treatments to achieve significant fading and complete removal. Each laser treatment breaks up numerous layers of ink in the tattoo, causing your tattoo to fade more until your desired goal is reached.

Tattoo Fading for Cover-Up Tattoos
Laser tattoo removal isn’t just for removing unwanted tattoos. It’s actually an editing tool that can help correct, transform, or improve new artwork. Cover-up tattoos are a popular option for unwanted tattoos. They conceal existing artwork with a new design that aligns more with the individual’s interests. However, cover-ups are challenging to apply, even for the most talented tattoo artists. Without laser tattoo removal, cover-ups carry several limitations, mainly if the existing tattoo includes a lot of black ink. By fading a tattoo, we can create a lighter canvas for your tattoo artist while eliminating potential size, color, and design restraints for your next perfect tattoo.
Laser tattoo removal is the safest, most effective method for removing unwanted tattoos. Other methods like tattoo removal creams, excision, salabrasion, saline injections, and dermabrasion are ineffective, invasive, or can result in scarring. Laser tattoo removal at Coastal Laser Center uses non-invasive laser technology to deliver unparalleled results for all skin types and tattoo colors. Our Technology
Coastal Laser Center uses industry-leading technology to ensure our clients receive the fastest, most successful laser tattoo removal results. We use the Asclepion PicoStar®, backed by Astanza, and the Astanza EternityTSR laser systems, to administer our tattoo removal procedures. The PicoStar® and EternityTSR are both FDA-cleared laser systems that provide the power of picosecond and Q-switched ruby laser technology.
Our cutting-edge lasers produce a total of three wavelengths to eliminate all tattoo colors safely from any skin type:
- 1064 nm: black, brown, and dark blue inks
- 532 nm: red, orange, yellow, and violet inks
- 694 nm: vivid blue, turquoise, teal, and bright green inks
With this combination of wavelengths, we have full-spectrum capabilities and can treat all multicolored tattoos, including resistant green and blue pigments, setting Coastal Laser Center apart from our competitors. As a result, this technology is trusted by leading laser tattoo removal providers, medical spas,
physicians, and tattoo shops worldwide. In addition, the PicoStar® and EternityTSR are both widely regarded as the industry’s safest and most effective pico and ruby Q-switched tattoo removal lasers.
The standout benefit of this picosecond laser is its incredibly short energy pulses, resulting in significantly reduced discomfort during treatments. Furthermore, the laser’s high-speed pulse duration and high pulse energy generate extreme peak power, fading ink faster than our competitors and making it easier for our clients to get results.
At Coastal Laser Center, we are dedicated to providing the safest, most efficient, and most effective laser treatments possible, and with the PicoStar® and EternityTSR lasers, we achieve precisely that! Our knowledgeable certified laser techs and our revolutionary Astanza laser equipment make Coastal Laser Center Newport News’ the #1 destination for all your tattoo removal needs.
The Zimmer Cryo Skin Numbing Technology
Our main goal at Coastal Laser Center is to make your laser tattoo removal experience as comfortable as possible. One of the ways we deliver this promise is by using the Zimmer Cryo cooling machine. This machine blows cold air onto the skin at -30ºC, numbing the skin in seconds to minimize pain throughout your treatment.
Depending on your pain tolerance, laser tattoo removal can feel like a rubber band snapping against the skin or similar to a tattoo being applied. However, the Zimmer Cryo makes treatment tolerable while reducing
the unwanted risks of getting a thermal injury from the laser.
Unlike ice packs or numbing creams that wear off after a few minutes, the Zimmer Cro constantly blows and numbs the skin throughout treatment, delivering maximum comfort before, during, and after your laser session. Furthermore, the Cryo decreases the skin temperature quicker than other methods while eliminating the risk of skin burns. Ask about our Zimmer Cryo during your free consultation to learn more!
DESCRIBE PFD Patches
Complete removal of a tattoo can take an extended amount of time. Luckily, Coastal Laser Center offers an accessory to tattoo removal, known as DESCRIBE PFD Patches manufactured by MERZ Aesthetics. This innovative product has been shown to reduce the total duration needed for complete removal of a tattoo or lightening of a tattoo for a cover up. The PFD patch combines two layers of medical grade silicone infused with a solution called perfluoro decalin. The silicone layers pull heat from the skin reducing swelling and the risk of tissue damage while the perfluoro decalin erases frosting allowing multiple treatments to occur in one session.
